Something that I learned about the Supreme Court that I didn’t already know is that the Supreme Court is the most powerful judicial group in the world. For example, the U.S. Supreme Court has a large influence on abortion Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization (2022). I also learned that the U.S. Supreme Court is a model for many other courts in the world. An eye opening fact that I noticed in the video was that the Supreme Court receives “more than one hundred new cases every week, and about 7,000 a year.” which gives the outcome of understanding that not every case will be seen. A major message is that the Supreme Court tries to not be political and biased. The Supreme Court wants to make sure that there is a big space between the population and themselves. This helps protect their power overall and prevents them from being biased.
The most important take-away point about the Supreme Court was that the Supreme Court is built on very simple ideas. This means that the ideas we created at the beginning while this country was being founded are still used hundreds of years later. Even with the country evolving and changing, the basic rules still are used to base off the Constitution and the principles that founded the United States.
The most surprising thing that I learned while watching the video is that we still use as a country the same laws that were created when the country was just established. When making decisions, it always goes back to the Constitution. Something that I also learned is that the Supreme Court Justices are appointed for their position for life. It becomes part of their personality and it is a massive life changing and high commitment job because they have a lot of pressure put on them. The video also stated that it takes three years for a justice to get comfortable with their job because it is so overwhelming. There are so many factors to consider when making such large decisions that affect every day lives of United States citizens. I couldn’t imagine having to wait three years to get comfortable with a job I am working at. It was also fascinating to understand that the 14th Amendment is used to protect a citizen’s everyday rights and some people also called the 14th Amendment the Second Bill of Rights because of its importance. The Supreme Court Justices use this amendment to protect the rights of U.S. citizens.
This video impacted and changed my thoughts on the Supreme Court by really understanding how much work the jobs are of the Supreme Court Justices. They have to answer very difficult questions and problems and even if it seems impossible, they still have to come to some conclusion. It makes me realize how people who work in the Supreme Court are giving their lives away and time so that they can commit to helping the United States government and its citizens.
